Thunder Bay, Ontario - Superior by Nature
Thunder Bay is one of Ontario’s largest cities, positioned beautifully on Lake Superior, and is also close to the US border. Thunder Bay hosts year-round events such as the Live on the Waterfront concert series, a blues festival, Canada Day celebrations, the Festival of India, BrewHa!, Winter Fun-Days, and Snow Day. These events’ annual attendance numbers have increased from a respectable 20,000 to more than 100,000 participants each year.
Transformational in its ambitions, Prince Arthur’s Landing has revitalized Thunder Bay’s downtown, catalyzed the tourism sector, and created permanent jobs while providing residents and visitors a truly unique waterfront destination, and one that embodies the spirit of this spectacular setting on the shores of Lake Superior. Prince Arthur’s Landing at Marina Park also features sailing and fishing charters while providing free WiFi throughout the area. The award winning Water Garden Pavilion features a display space for artists called Mariner’s Hall which is adjacent to Bight Restaurant and its outdoor patio as well as public amenities. Next door to this pavilion is the splash pad, which welcomes all ages and offers a great way to cool off on hot days or, during the cooler months, visitors can enjoy ice skating with family and friends.
Participants at the new Skateboard Plaza usually begin in April and stay well after the snow starts to fall. Right near this park is the Waterfront District. This area features phenomenal specialty shops including giftware, fashion, spa and salon services, and much more. Included in this area are many artisan studios and galleries featuring local works as well as nationally recognized pieces.
The exceptional local dining experience is endless in the Waterfront District. Options vary from quick snacks to casual dining, or you can relax and indulge yourself with an elegant meal from a variety of fine dining restaurants, bistros, and cafes. While grabbing a bite to eat, catch live performances at many of the establishments or at the locally produced Magnus Theatre. After a filling lunch or dinner, try your luck at the nearby casino.
Are you looking to get out and enjoy a workout while taking in breathtaking views? There are hundreds of hiking trails within an hour of Thunder Bay but there are also trails within 15 minutes of the waterfront at Centennial Park. Merely 5 miles away is Boulevard Lake featuring a beautiful inland lake as well as roads/trails around the lake itself; about 3 miles for a great walk or run. Located along the lake is a playground area, public beach, and, for more outdoor activities, you can rent kayaks and paddleboards.
The marina has 270 slips of various sizes and many of the local boaters are more than willing to relocate to accommodate transient vessels. The marina can also accommodate up to 40-foot sail or powerboats. If you need a spot to do some repairs while visiting, the main boat repair shop would be McKellar Marine.
